Introduction

by James J. Czuchra

The index is based on a microfilmed copy of Roman Catholic parish records made by the Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah, films 0493393 and 0528637.  Film 0493393 covers the time period from about 1767 to 1833.  Film 0528637 covers the time period from about 1834 to 1862.  The birth and marriage indices cover this entire time span while the death index only covers the 1834 to 1862 period.  These records were filmed in Germany-- the parish office does not have these records.  The parish office has the record books for the time period after 1862.  Film 0493393 is confusing in that there seemed to be two copies of some records, either a different transcript or perhaps a refilming of the same material.   Some years are also missing.

This index is intended as a finding aid and is not to be used as a primary source of genealogical data. Rather than having to read the microfilm line by line, the index helps locate persons more rapidly. The index was prepared as a finding aid for my own research but other researchers may find it useful. I tried to settle on a consistent spelling for surnames so that they are grouped together.  I have included some spelling alternatives with a reference to how the name was indexed.  Approximations of illegible surnames were made.  The marriage index includes some of what I call "inferred marriages".  These are actually based on the baptisms of the couple's children who were baptized in Mąkowarsko.  The couple may have been married in a different parish (or their record in Mąkowarsko was not found).  "Inferred marriages" are identified in the notes column.  The "Page-Enum" column refers to the page number and a number of enumeration, usually for that year.  Since the records are arranged chronologically within each parish register, you probably only need to know the date.  The "Notes" column might provide other spellings of names or say something about the condition of the record.
