A common Kashub name in the region south of Lipusz, around Les~no, Poland. Also in the Otter Lake, Quebec and Renfrew, Ontario areas. Because of French influence with the accent on the last syllable, it is often pronounced Lepàck and thought to be a French name. There are 33 Lepaks in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory and common also in other Kashub areas of U.S.A.

Known in Lipusz region of Poland and in Renfrew area of Ontario. There are 5 Libera in Winona, Minnesota phone directory. Not too frequent a name, but seen in several areas of U.S.A.

Kashub name quite common throughout U.S.A. though some have changed it to Litzer. Name is unknown now in Ontario, but one of early settlers along the Opeongo Line was a Lica. There are 3 Licas in Winona, Minnesota phone directory; 1 Litzer in Stevens Point directory.

There are 6 Literski in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory; 3 in Winona phone directory. Msgr. Literski is rector of Winona Catholic Cathedral. Another Fr. Literski was from Pine Creek, Wisconsin and the name is known in that region.

Don't remember the name from Lipusz or in the Barry's Bay region of Ontario. About 5 families of Lizakowski in the Minto, Warsaw regions of North Dakota.

Very common name among Kashubs in Poland (Lipusz) and in North America. After World War I the name seems to have been changed to Rolbiecki in Poland. Thus all early comers to America call themselves Lorbieckis. Comers later in the 20th century call themselves Rolbieckis. Lots of Lorbetski in the Barry's Bay, Renfrew regions of Ontario. There are 18 Lorbiecki, Lorbecki, Lorbeck, Lorbeski in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory; 6 Rolbiecki in Winona phone directory. Both names appear in Lipusz registers.

Not certain if it is the same name or this may possibly be another form of the name Lezynski, but I would guess it to be a different name or two different names. Unknown in Ontario, but encountered in several Kashub regions of the U.S.A. There are 10 Losinskis in Winona directory; 9 Lasinski in Stevens Point phone directory and 12 Losinski.

A Kaszub name known in Lipusz, Poland. Several Lubeckis in Fancher, Wisconsin graveyard. The name is extinct now in the Barry's Bay region but a family of Lubetskis lived there around the turn of the century. Msgr. Ambrose Pick's grandmother, Mrs. John Pick was a Lubecki. A Leonard Lubecke alone is listed in Stevens Point phone directory.

Whether the names "?ukasiewicz" and "?ukaszewicz" are meant to be the same name I am not sure. The first seem more common.

Common name in Lipusz, Poland. The name has almost disappeared from Ontario, but gravestones testify to their early presence in the Barry's Bay , Wilno, Round Lake areas. Some Mackwoods moved to Loverna, Saskatchewan and descendants live in Alberta, Canada. 2 Machutts in Winona, Minnesota phone directory.

Some in Lipusz area of Poland. A famous Kashub patriotic writer around the end of the 19th Century was Aleksander Majkowski. He advised Kashubs to stop emigrating from Pomerania. The name Majka, Maika is well known in the Barry's Bay region. It is a different name and is not a Kashub name. No Majkowskis in Ontario or in regions investigated in U.S.A.

Good example of the evolution of a name. Probably German in origin, it became Maschke under German occupation, later under Poland it became Maszke, then Maszka and Maszk. Lots of Mask in Barry Bay and Renfrew Country, Ontario. Common name around Lipusz, Parchowo, Poland in both forms: Maszka and Maszk. The name Maszk appears in Hatley, Wisconsin and in Warsaw, North Dakota. There are Maschkes in Renfrew county who are of German descent and Lutheran.

Lots of Kashubized Matcheskis in the Barry's Bay region, but it is doubtful whether this was originally a Kashub name. Don't remember seeing it in Kashub Poland. In U.S.A. I saw the name on a gravestone in Sobieski, Wisconsin.

One Mielewczyk, an avowed Kashub, lives in the Barry's Bay region. He is a post World War II comer and not one of the originals. A name not encountered elsewhere by the author.

One of the earliest settlers on the Opeongo Line was an Albert Omernik in the 1860's, but soon moved to Polonia, Wisconsin. There are 36 Omernik - Omernick in the Polonia, Stevens Point phone directory but the name changed to Omanique is rare now in Ontario. John Omanique and his son Joseph were big lumber dealers in Barry's Bay and Pembroke, Ontario. In Poland the name seems most common in the BytÑw, Rekowo region.

Peplinskis are known throughout Southern Cassubia, also in Lipusz. Several distinct families emigrated to Canada and there are many Peplinskis in the Barry's Bay, Renfrew and throughout Canada and the U.S.A. There are 10 Peplinski in the Winona phone directory; 15 in Stevens Point, Polonia book. The name is widespread: St. Philips's, Montana, Idaho, Greenbush, Minnesota. The best known Peplinski in Canada is perhaps Jim Peplinski, retired from Calgary Flames, N.H.L. hockey team and turned colour-commmentator on T.V.

There is a Pershick Lake next to the Barry's Bay golf course, where a Walenty (Valentine) Perszyk first settled on the Opeongo Line, but the Pershicks have long since left the Barry's Bay region. Some abide in Renfrew and there is a colony of Pershicks in and near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where they moved from Renfrew. Perszyks in Perham, Minnesota. One only Perszyk in Winona, Minnesota phone book. A Kashub name, but not around Lipusz, Poland.

A name familiar in many parts of Poland beside Cassubia. From the beginning in the 1860's, a prolific name in the Barry's Bay, Wilno areas. Only one Piekarski, Rev. Francis Piekarski in Stevens Point phone book. Doesn't seem too frequent a name in Kashub areas of U.S.A.

Seems to be a Jewish name as there were many Jews among the Kashubs in Poland. The Barry's Bay, Renfrew region seems to have had one or two Pinkos among the early settlers.

Name familiar in Lipusz, Poland. Possibly the earliest spelling in German days was Retza. Later became Reca (Retsa) under Poland and among earliest settlers in Canada along Opeongo Line. Later became Ritza in Canada. Quite a few Retza and Ritza in Barry's Bay, Renfrew and Kitchener districts in Ontario. Fr. Leonard Retza, R.I.P. A typical Kashub name. The word "rek" in Kashub means "cancer" or "crab". The word for "crab" and "cancer" in classical Polish is "rak", hence Rakowski is a classical Polish (non-Kashub) name. There is a Rekowo Lake in Kashub, Poland, Rekowo village, Dolne Rekowo and GÑrne Rekowo. So Rekowski seem to be all over and particularly so in the BytÑw region, in the village of Rekowo. Many Rekowski names in that district have przydomeks like Wantoch-Rekowski (of Rekowo), Wrycz-Rekowski and the famous Styp-Rekowski. Elsewhere it's plain Rekowskis. The Wilno, Barry's Bay Rekowskis hailed from Kalisz in the parish of Lipusz. There are numerous Recoskis in Barry's Bay, Wilno, Round Lake. In the Renfrew area they have retained their "Rekowski" spelling. There are 9 Rekowski at least in the Stevens Point, Polonia phone book (also Rajkowskis?). None in Winona directories at present, but a few Rekowski tombstones in Winona and in Pine Creek, Wisconsin.

A Kashub name probably of German derivation. Those left in Kashub, Poland today spell it as Szultka. Many seem to have emigrated to Germany. The many all over the U.S.A. generally spell it Schultek or Schultka which was no doubt the way it was spelt in West Prussia when their forefathers migrated to the U.S. (Minnesota) and at which time the Kashubs were under German rule. No sign of the name in Canada or in the Stevens Point or Winona regions. Ref. Appendix No 8.

A prominent and common Kashub name in Lipusz and surrounding country. Szulist in Poland, Shulist in Barry's Bay, Wilno, etc. regions in Ontario, Schulist in U.S.A. There are 18 listed in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Fr. Joseph Schulist, R.I.P. from Polonia, Fr. Sylvester Shulist, R.I.P. of Wilno, Fr. Wladys?aw Szulist, the Kashub authority in Poland.

The name is very German, yet there are lots of Schusters among the Kashubs. There are 12 families of Schuster in the Minto, Warsaw, North Dakota region.
202) SZYCA SZYCA   SCHUTZA, SCHULTZ, SZULE
A Kashub name that has become Germanized. The only Szyea I know in Barry's Bay was Uncle John Cybulski's (at Cybulski Lake) mother. Winona phone directory shows 41 Schultz, some of whom I know to be of Kashub origin. Stevens Point phone directory lists 37 Schultz, not all of Kashub origin, I'm sure. The name is also spelled Szule in Poland today and quite a common name there.

A common name in Lipusz, Ko?cierzyna region of Poland. An odd name, easily anglicized. Not known much in the Barry's Bay, Wilno area but prominent in the Renfrew area of Ontario. There are 29 shulfer and schulfer in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Seemed to be in Construction Business: John Schulfer Construction Co., Park Ridge, Wisconsin. A Sulpher from Renfrew built St. Mary's Church in Wilno, Ontario.

One of the early pioneers on the Opeongo Line was a Sadowski but the name seems to have disappeared in the Barry's Bay region like other early Kashub names. I suspect it is a name known in other regions of Poland as well. There are 2 Saduski in Stevens Point phone directory; 5 Sadowski in Winona phone directory.

Another name known also in other parts of Poland besides Cassubia. The Skebos in Barry's Bay and Wilno have disappeared and only the Renfrew Skebos remain. There are 2 Skiba and 11 Skibba in the Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Two sons of Martin Skebo of Wilno, Basil and Patrick lost their lives in World War II.

The only Slominski family that seems to have come to Ontario was that of Ignacy Slominski. He built the hotel in Wilno, operated it; then moved to Edmonton, Alberta and finally settled in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan. Relatives and descendants live in and near Saskatoon. Most changed their names to Saunders. About 12 families of Slominskis live in the Minto, Warsaw, Kashub area of North Dakota. Two priests: Fr. Anthony Slominski R.I.P. died and buried in Barry's Bay, Ontario, Fr. Frank Slominski, R.I.P., from Warsaw, North Dakota.

Undoubtedly a Kashub name but unknown in Ontario. There are 24 Stanislawski in Stevens Point, Rosholt phone directory; 5 Stanislawski in Winona directory and 2 or 3 Stanislowski families in Minto, Warsaw, North Dakota district.

A name familiar if not too frequent in Lipusz, Poland and in the Barry's Bay area of Ontario. I have not encountered the name elsewhere.

Another German sounding name popular around the Kartuzy area of Poland. Unknown in Ontario. There are 3 Stencels in the Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory; 3 Stencel and 2 Stenzel in Winona directory.
213) STE~PNAKOWSKI STAMPLECOSKI STEPLACHOWSKI  
(pronounced: Stempnakowski)
A difficult and an unusual name and so has taken on several variations. Known in Lipusz, Poland. Quite a number of Stamplecoski in the Barry's Bay, Wilno regions. I haven't found the name elsewhere.
214) STOPA, STOPPA (foot) STOPPA    
A few Stopas in Lipusz parish. Lots of "Stoppa" in Barry's Bay, Wilno, Cobden, Ontario areas and there only. Several Stolpa in Winona directory but no Stopa. Polish names ending in "a" are often Silesian.
215) STROIK STRACK STROIQUE STROIK
One of the earliest names in Renfrew. The French priests had problems with it and simplified it to "Stroique". Now it's all Strack in the Barry's Bay-Renfrew regions, hardly a Polish name. There are 34 Stroiks in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
216) ZDROIK     ZDROIK
Hardly the same name as Stroik? Unknown in Ontario. There are 26 Zdroiks in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
217) STUBIN~SKI STUBINSKI    
Name known only in the Renfrew area of Ontario.
218) STUFKO(?) STUFKO    
Name known only in the Renfrew area of Ontario.
219) STOLC, SCHTOLTZ STOLC, STOLTZ    
A thoroughly German name but many Kashubs bear that name in Lipusz and elsewhere. The Stoltz name in Barry's Bay seems to be disappearing. There are 4 Stoltz in Winona directory.
220) SUSZEK (the drier) SHUSHAK SHUSHACK  
Real Kashub name, in Lipusz, Poland. Among the earliest settlers along the Opeongo Line. The name Shushak is well known in the Barry's Bay, Wilno region of Ontario. I haven't discovered the name in the U.S.A.
221) SYDOK(?) SIDOCK    
Not sure is the name is Kashub. Only in the Barry's Bay, Whitney area have I discovered Sidocks.
222) SYNAK SENACK    
A Kashub name only encountered in the Otter Lake, Renfrew regions, not frequent.
223) SZCZYPI”R CHIPPIOR, CHIPPURE CHIPEUR, STIPIO SZCZYPIOR, SCIPIOR
Another difficult name. Two of the very first pioneers on the Opeongo Line were Szczypiors. In Poland, it seems to come from north of Lipusz, around Sierakowice. There are lots of Chippiors in the Barry's Bay, Wilno area. Some left there and moved to Saskatchewan where they are known as Chipeurs. There are 7 Scipiors in the Sevens Point phone book.
224) SZMAGLIN~SKI SMAGLINSKI    
Quite common in Barry's Bay, Wilno region. The only place I saw the name otherwise was in Hofa Park, Wisconsin.
225) SZMAGLIK     SMAGLIK
This name seems to appear in U.S.A. and Kashub Poland more frequently than Szmaglinski. In Wiele, Poland; 1 Smaglik in Fountain City, Wisconsin outside Winona; and 3 in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
226) SZOLA SHALLA SZALA SHALLOW (Seattle)
Quite rare in Kashub Poland today. There are 3 in Gda?sk phone directory. Two strains of Shallas came to Opeongo Line and to Wilno early. Numerous descendants in Barry's Bay, Wilno, Renfrew areas today. One lone big Szala tombstone in cemetery in Perham, Minnesota.
227) SZWEDA SWEDA    
Apparently a Kashub name (as well as in other parts of Poland.) Familiar only in Renfrew and Otter Lake areas.
228) SZYKOWNY (nice, handsome)     SZYKOWNY
Sounds like a real Kashub name. Several families of Nice (Szykowny) in Minto, Warsaw regions of North Dakota. Unknown elsewhere.
229) TREDER TRADER   TRADOR, TREDER, TREDOR
A common name throughout Cassubia. Franciszek Treder organized the Kashub museum in Kartuzy. Quite a few Traders in the Barry's Bay region of Ontario - big, tall people. Larry Trader, an N.H.L. hockey player. There are 4 Treders and 1 Trader in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
230) TRZEBIATOWSKI     TREBIATOSKI, TREBATOSKI, TIBIATOWSKI
Where ever there are Kashubs, there are Trzebiatowskis, except in Canada. Lots in the Lipusz and Les~no regions of Poland. Sometimes to make the name longer, with przydomeks, e.g.: Jutrzenka-Trzebiatowski. There are 5 Trzebiatowski in Winona phone directory; 47 in Stevens Point phone directory plus 7 Trebatowski. Several Tibiatowski women in Minto, Warsaw, North Dakota.
231) TRZEBIN~SKI TREBINSKI TREBENSKI  
Hard name to trace among the Kashubs. One Trzebi?ski in the Gda?sk phone directory. One of the early settlers along the Opeongo Line, 1860 was a Paul Trzebi?ski. Quite a few Trebinski in the Barry's Bay, Round Lake regions of Ontario. Non found in U.S.A.
232) TURZYN~SKI TURZINSKI   TURZENSKI, TURZINSKI
Common around Lipusz, Poland. The few in the Wilno region died out or moved. Some Turzinski remain in Kitchener, Ontario. There are 2 Turzenski and 8 Turzinski in Stevens Point phone directory.
233) TUSZKOWSKI     TUSZKOWSKI, TUSZKA
Variations of the same name. There are 8 Tuszkowski in the Stevens Point phone book and 11 Tuszka. None in Ontario.
234) WAJS VICE   WEISS
German name in origin. The name is written Wajs in Kashub Poland since World War I. The same name anglicized to Vice has disappeared in Barry's Bay since the death of Joe Vice. A few Vice still in Renfrew; 4 Weiss in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, but no guarantee that they are of Kashub Origin. The name is not common among Kashubs.
235) WAL~DOCH VOLDOCK VOLDO WALDOCH, WALDOCK
A well known Kashub name in Lipusz, Poland and all through Cassubia. As Voldock, it is well known throughout Barry's Bay, Wilno, Renfrew regions of Ontario. As Waldock there is only one in the Winona phone directory, but 8 in Stevens Point phone directory.

I don't remember the name in Poland nor in Ontario. There are 39 Wantas in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
237) WANTOCH     WANTOCH, WANTOCK
In Poland, in the vicinity of BytÑw and Lipusz and as a przydomek, e.g.: Wantoch-Rekowski. Unknown in Ontario; 10 Wantocks in Winona phone directory; 1 or 2 as Wantoch.
238) WATKOWSKI WATKOWSKI   WATKOWSKI
Unknown in Ontario though Edmund Watkowski was official organist in Wilno Church from 1897 - 1908. There are 3 Watkowski in Winona, Minnesota phone directory; Watkowski Funeral Home. Name also known in Pine Creek, Wisconsin.
239) WEJHER, WEYHER     WEJHER, WEJER
The name of a German count among the Kashubs who converted to Catholicism and funded the famous shrine to Mary at the city of Wejherowo, Poland. No Wejher in Ontario, but have seen the name on tombstones in Pine Creek, Wisconsin and elsewhere.

Unknown in Ontario. There are 5 Wera and 2 Werra in Winona phone directory; 1 each in Stevens Point phone directory. Not certain if Kashub.
241) WICKA     WICKA
Unknown in Ontario, 10 Wicka in Winona phone directory. Could be a Silesian name.
242) WIE~CKOWSKI VANCUSKI    
Familiar in the Barry's Bay, Renfrew regions of Ontario. A name perhaps familiar in others parts of Poland beside Cassubia.

Unknown in Ontario. There are 25 Wierzba in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Could be a Silesian name.

A name familiar in Kashub Poland. The name Vitkuske is dying out in Barry's Bay, Renfrew regions. Vitkuske's General Store, Barry's Bay. There are 15 Witkowski in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.

There are 17 Wizas in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Again I am not sure if it is a Kashub name. None in Ontario.
248) WOJCIECHOWSKI     WOJCIECHOWSKI
A name prevalent in all parts of Poland. None it seems in Barry's Bay, Renfrew regions. There are 3 Wojciechowski in Winona phone directory; 3 in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.

A very common name in Le?no, Lipusz areas of Poland. Rouble is a common Kashub name in Renfrew, Otter Lake areas of Ontario.
250) WR”BLEWSKI RUMLESKI   WROBLEWSKI, WRUBLESKI
Lots of Rumleski in the Barry's Bay region of Ontario. Since I cannot trace the origin of the name, having seen it nowhere else in my travels, I would propose that it is the same name WrÑblewski which name is very common amongst Kashubs as well as in other parts of Poland. There are 33 Wroblewski, Wrubleski in the Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory; 3 Wroblewski in Winona directory.
251) WORZAL~L~A     WORZALLA, WORZELLA
I don't remember the name from Poland nor have there every been Worzal~l~as in Ontario. Their domain is Stevens Point, Wisconsin where they own the Worzalla Publishing Co., which has published the Polish newspaper "Gurazda Polarna" since the turn of the century. There are 41 Worzalla and Worzella in the Stevens Point phone directory.

A Kashub name from around BytÑw, Poland. Name is unknown in Ontario. There are 4 in Stevens Point phone directory, 2 in Winona phone directory.

A very common Kashub name though might appear in other regions of Poland as well. The name as Visutski is well known in Barry's Bay, Renfrew, Eganville regions of Ontario. There are 21 Wysocki in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Several Wysocki families in Minto, Warsaw region, North Dakota.

I don't remember the name in Poland or in Ontario. There are 17 Yach in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory. Could be of German or Kashub origin.

I don't remember the name in Poland or in Ontario. There are 13 Yenter in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory; 1 in Winona directory. Quite certainly a Kashub name.
256) ZABROCKI     ZABROCKI, ZABROSKI
First name seen in Lipusz, Poland. No Zabrocki in Ontario. Zabrocki name familiar in Greenbush area Minnesota; in St. Philip's and Great Falls, Montana. Definitely Kashub, though not too common in U.S.A. There is 1 in Winona phone directory; 1 Zabroski in Stevens Point phone directory.
257) ZBLEWSKI BLESKI   ZBLEWSKI
Very common name in south-eastern Cassubia. Lots of Bleski in Barry's Bay, Wilno, Renfrew regions of Ontario. There are 18 Zblewski in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory.
258) ZBL~OWSKI BLOSKI    
Only place I have encountered the name is in the Barry's Bay, Wilno region of Ontario. The name as Zb~lowski was there in the Beginning - 1860's. Some might claim the name was originally the same as Zb?ewski (Bleski-Bloski) but parish records do not bear that out. No Zb~lowski found in U.S.A.

In Lipusz, etc., Poland. None in Ontario. There are 36 Zinda and 9 Zynda in Polonia Stevens Point phone book.

Common name in Kashub, Poland. The name was known in the Barry's Bay, Wilno areas in the beginning. Now the only Zavitski remaining in Ontario are around Renfrew. There are 19 Zywicki in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory and 4 Zywicke and 3 Zivicki and 1 Ziwicki in Winona.
